Givan Raises Concerns Over Campaign Influence

Alabama State Representative Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) is speaking out about what she describes as growing political pressure, questionable campaign activity, and outside influence in state politics.
In a recent episode of the Heart of Dixie podcast with hosts Harry Still and Brandon Mosley, Givan outlined a series of concerns tied to her re-election campaign in House District 60 and broader issues within Alabama’s political system.
Givan alleged that her current race has drawn interference from local leadership, pointing to what she described as unusual financial activity tied to her opponent’s campaign. She claimed that Birmingham’s Mayor Randall Woodfin is playing a role in directing funds, raising questions about transparency in local elections.
She also pointed to discrepancies in campaign finance reports, naming Iron City Communications and questioning whether proper disclosures were made. According to Givan, these filings warrant closer scrutiny to ensure compliance with ethics laws.
The conversation then turned to the role of gambling interests in Alabama politics. Givan and the hosts discussed how money from out-of-state groups, including the Sports Gaming Alliance, may be flowing into local political action committees. They argued that this funding structure allows donors to support candidates while avoiding more direct regulatory oversight.
Givan expressed concern about the long-term impact of that influence, suggesting it could shape policy decisions and legislative priorities in ways that are not always visible to voters.
