Veteran prosecutor Andy Hamlin has endorsed former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell in the Republican runoff for Alabama Attorney General, adding another District Attorney to Mitchell’s growing list of law enforcement supporters.

Hamlin serves as District Attorney for Alabama’s 24th Judicial Circuit, which covers Pickens, Lamar and Fayette Counties. Governor Kay Ivey appointed him to the post in 2018. Before that, Hamlin spent more than a decade serving as an Assistant District Attorney and later Chief Assistant District Attorney under former DA and current Alabama Supreme Court Justice Chris McCool.

Hamlin pointed to Mitchell’s legal background and leadership style as key reasons for his endorsement.

“Jay Mitchell has the courtroom experience and strength of character that the office demands,” Hamlin said. “I've watched him in action, and I know him to be a leader who will do what’s right for the State—no matter the cost. Alabama needs an Attorney General who has the legal skill and drive necessary to make Alabama the safest state in the country, which is why I am proud to endorse Jay Mitchell in this race.”

Mitchell welcomed the endorsement and praised Hamlin’s years in prosecution work.

“Andy Hamlin is a respected veteran prosecutor who understands what it takes to deliver justice for Alabama families,” Mitchell said. “I am grateful for his support and wise counsel, and I'm honored to have another proven law enforcement leader standing with us.”

The endorsement comes as Mitchell continues to build support among prosecutors, Sheriffs and Police Chiefs across the state. His campaign has also highlighted backing from former Attorney General candidate and Blount County District Attorney Pam Casey, along with several County Sheriffs and law enforcement officials.

Mitchell, a former trial attorney and Alabama Supreme Court justice, entered the Attorney General race after stepping down from the State’s High Court in 2025. His campaign has focused heavily on crime, immigration enforcement and support for law enforcement. He is seeking to replace outgoing Attorney General Steve Marshall, who is term-limited.

The Republican runoff election for Attorney General is scheduled for June 16.
