Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Hoover, Alabama, during a press conference held at 2 p.m. on March 17, 2025, at the former Buy Buy Baby store in the Patton Creek shopping center.

Derzis, who has served with the Hoover Police Department since 1979 and as chief since 2005, emphasized his deep commitment to the community and his desire to continue serving in a new capacity. He stated, "After over four decades in law enforcement, I believe it's time to bring my experience and dedication to the role of mayor, ensuring Hoover remains a safe and thriving city."

Throughout his tenure, Derzis has been instrumental in implementing key initiatives, including the establishment of the tactical response team and the school resource officer program. Under his leadership, the department achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in 2022, meeting 180 internationally accepted standards for law enforcement work.

Reflecting on his accomplishments, Derzis remarked, "I'm proud of the advancements we've made in our police department, from enhancing tactical responses to fostering strong community relations. These experiences have prepared me to lead our city effectively."

The announcement sets the stage for a mayoral race against incumbent Frank Brocato, who has held the position since 2016 and announced his intention to seek a third term in December. Brocato previously served 42 years with the Hoover Fire Department before retiring in 2015 as fire marshal and chief operations officer.

Addressing the upcoming election, Derzis commented, "Mayor Brocato has dedicated many years to our city, and I respect his service. However, I believe it's time for new leadership that builds upon our successes and addresses the evolving needs of our community."

Derzis's decision to run has been a topic of speculation for months, with his name frequently mentioned as a potential candidate. In previous statements, he had indicated no plans to run, making this announcement a significant development in Hoover's political landscape.

Derzis's campaign will likely focus on public safety, community engagement, and sustainable growth. He has been recognized for his fashionable attire during nationally aired press conferences, notably during a 2023 incident involving a reported abduction on Interstate 459.

Born in Berlin, Germany, as the son of a U.S. Army colonel, Derzis lived worldwide before settling in Alabama in 1977. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Samford University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

As the campaign progresses, Hoover residents can anticipate a robust discussion on the city's future direction, with Derzis's extensive experience in public service at the forefront of his mayoral bid.
