Ken McFeeters Announces Plan to Honor Alabama's Constitution in New State House
“We the people set up our constitution as a covenant with our elected officials, and we did it with huge limitations”—Ken McFeeters

MONTGOMERY, AL — If elected Governor, Ken McFeeters plans to add something truly special to Alabama's new State House building — a permanent reminder of the sacred limits of government power.
The new Alabama State House, under construction since 2023, is projected to open in the fall of 2026 at a cost of $400 million taxpayer dollars. McFeeters believes such a building must not only house lawmakers but also reflect the constitutional covenant between the people of Alabama and their government.
McFeeters' plan calls for the installation of large monuments, plaques, or engravings at every entrance and in all eleven committee rooms. These will feature Article 1, Section 35 of Alabama's Constitution:
"That the sole object and only legitimate end of government is to protect the citizen in the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property, and when the government assumes other functions, it is usurpation and oppression."
To ensure clarity, the plaques will also include the definition of usurpation:
"the taking of a position of power or importance unlawfully or by force."
With a touch of self-deprecating humor, McFeeters remarked that he once had to "look up the definition" himself, and he wants to make sure no lawmaker or visitor ever has to pull out a phone to understand Alabama's constitutional foundation.
"Every lawmaker and every visitor should be reminded of Article 1, Section 35 every time they enter the sacred halls of our new State House," McFeeters said. "We the people set up our constitution as a covenant with our elected officials, and we did it with huge limitations. This will remind both lawmakers and the people of those limits."
McFeeters emphasized that Alabama's founders — both fathers and mothers — made clear what the people of this state had in mind for government. "I don't think there could be a clearer statement," he said. "Hopefully, this will inspire generations of lawmakers to follow our constitution."
Importantly, McFeeters pledged that the project will not come from taxpayer funds. Instead, the monuments will be "freely given" through donations from the citizens of Alabama — not taken through taxation, and not mandated by politicians."
With this initiative, McFeeters aims to anchor Alabama's future firmly in the wisdom of its past.
Ken McFeeters is a Republican candidate for Governor of Alabama. He is a former congressional candidate for Alabama's 6th District and past President of the Mid-Alabama Republican Club.
