LaPoint Issues Statement on Ella Cook’s Death
Cook, a 19-year old sophomore and Mountain Brook native, was one of two students killed in the Brown University shooting attack on Saturday
Investigative journalist, author and Republican candidate for Congress in Alabama’s 3rd District Terri LaPoint has issues the following statement on the death of Mountain Brook native Ella Cook:
“My prayers are with the family of Ella Cook, whose life was cut short by evil. The beautiful Mountain Brook, Alabama, native was one of the victims of the Brown University shooting. As the Vice-President of the College Republicans on her campus, she was conservative and stood strong on her convictions. That is something we should honor and respect, whether we agree or disagree.
“Colleges and universities are supposed to be places to explore ideas and to hear differing viewpoints. Instead, they have degenerated into little villages where tolerance is preached, but conservative values are demonized. Silenced. Even hunted down and eliminated. This should not be!
“We must return to the place of hearing and honoring those who don't think like us. America was founded on the concept of Freedom - freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press. Those are core values. Violence is not the answer. Parents should not live in fear of sending their children to school. Ella was a beautiful, shining light in a world of darkness. May we all honor her strength, courage, and voice, no matter what our beliefs are. America, for the sake of our children, please wake up. Return to the place of honor for our fellow human beings. Discuss ideas while respecting life. Our future depends on it.”
Cook, a 19-year old sophomore, was one of two students killed in the attack, which also left nine others wounded. Her death was announced Sunday during services at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, where she was remembered as a devout member of the congregation.
