Marques Calls for More Deportations After SCOTUS Ruling
Trump-backed AL-2 candidate Rhett Marques says Congress must act on birthright citizenship, calls for expanded deportations of criminal illegal aliens
Republican congressional candidate Rhett Marques is calling for Congress to take up President Donald Trump's effort to end what he describes as "unlimited birthright citizenship" after this week's U.S. Supreme Court decision reaffirmed that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born on American soil.
In a Thursday statement, Marques, an Alabama State Representative from Enterprise and Trump's endorsed candidate in Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, said lawmakers should respond quickly to the Court's ruling by pursuing legislation and expanding deportations of criminal illegal immigrants.
"The Supreme Court decision on birthright citizenship presents a crisis for our nation that we must address quickly and strongly," Marques said. "Birthright citizenship should only be reserved for children born to a legal United States citizen. Unlimited birthright citizenship and pregnancy tourism act as magnets incentivizing the type of mass migration that has led to devastating loss of American lives and prosperity. In Congress, I will introduce whatever legislative fix President Trump determines is the long-term solution to right this wrong."
The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that President Trump's Executive Order limiting birthright citizenship violated the 14th Amendment, holding that children born in the United States to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present are citizens at birth. The decision rejected the administration's interpretation of the Constitution and significantly disappointed a number of conservative commentator.
Marques argued that Congress should now pursue a legislative response while supporting the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts.
"President Trump has delivered the greatest border security and deportation effort in history, and we need more of it," Marques said. "The answer is simple: double down on enforcement, deport every criminal illegal alien, and keep putting Americans first. We have to stand up to the radical left socialists and communists who are trying to destroy America through open borders and handing out citizenship recklessly."
Marques also pointed to legislation he sponsored earlier this year in the Alabama House that would require candidates for Alabama's constitutional offices to be natural-born United States citizens.
He said the proposal was intended to prevent "radicals like Zohran Mamdani who openly hate America and want to dismantle our way of life from holding Alabama's highest offices."
"I've fought these battles in Alabama, and I'll keep fighting them in Washington," Marques concluded. "I'll stand with President Trump to put America First, secure our nation's interior, and defend the value of American citizenship."
Trump endorsed Marques in the race for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, praising the Enterprise lawmaker's conservative record.
"A Highly Respected State Representative, Businessman, and Civic Leader, prior to running for Congress, Rhett has dedicated his life to serving his Community. As your next Congressman, he will fight tirelessly to Grow our Economy, Champion our Farmers and American Agriculture, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, Advance Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment," Trump said in his endorsement.
Marques is seeking the Republican nomination in Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. The Republican primary is scheduled for Aug. 11.
