The 2026 Primary Elections gave Alabama a mixed bag of clear winners in both parties, with a fair number of races going to runoffs.

Voter turnout was preliminary estimated 879,381 total ballots cast out of 3,805,005 registered voters, for a turnout of 27.11%.

In the Governor’s primary, both Republican Tommy Tuberville and Democrat Doug Jones won their races handily.

In the Lieutenant Governor races, Democrat Phillip Ensler defeated Daryl D. Perryman with over 57% of the vote, avoiding a runoff. On the Republican side, former Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl and sitting Secretary of State Wes Allen topped a crowded field and will advance to the runoff together.

In the U.S. Senate primary, Democrats Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett were the two top candidates, and will face each other in the runoff.

The seven-person Republican U.S. Senate Race saw Congressman Barry Moore receive the highest number of votes at just over 39% of those cast. The second highest candidate was former Navy SEAL Jarod Hudson, who managed to eke out a narrow lead over Attorney General Steve Marshall. Hudson’s 4,707 vote lead (out of a total of 481,940 votes cast) was the narrowest runoff margin of the major races of the evening.

Incumbent Republican Mike Rogers solidly defeated newcomer Terri LaPoint in Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District. In Alabama’s 4th District, Republican incumbent Robert Aderholt easily defeated challenger Tommy Barnes, and incumbent Republican Dale Strong had no opposition in the AL-05 race.

For the Democrats, Amanda N. Pusczek won the AL-04 race outright, while Andrew Snead and Candace Dollar Duvieilh will runoff in AL-05 for the right to face Republican Strong in November.

Due to the special primary elections called in Congressional Districts 1,2,6 and 7, these races — while on the ballot — were rendered null and void by Acts passed in the recent special session. These special primaries will be held August 11, with qualifying for them opening May 20.

In the Attorney General‘s race, current Chief Counsel Katherine Robertson and former Alabama state Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell will face each other in the runoff in four weeks. Democrat Jeff McLaughlin had no primary opposition.

Similarly, Democrat Wayne Rogers had no primary opposition in the Secretary of State race, while Republican Caroleene Dobson easily defeated her opponents with over 65% of the vote.

Democrats Rosalyn Houston (State Treasurer), Violet Edwards (State Auditor) and Ron Sparks (Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries) and Shelia D. McNeil (Public Service Commission, Place 2) also ran without opposition in the primary.

Incumbent Republican Young Boozer defeated his opponent in the State Treasurer race by an ample margin, and thus will not face a runoff.

Similarly, incumbent State Auditor, Republican Andrew Sorrell defeated challenger Derrick Chen with nearly 68% of the vote, to make Sorrell the Republican nominee to keep his current position.

In the Republican race for Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, Corey Hill and Christina Woerner McInnis were less than 1,500 votes apart (out of 427,877 cast), and will continue on to the runoff.

In the Public Service Commission, Place 1 races, Democrat James O. Gordon and Republican Matt Gentry both attained enough votes to win without a runoff. In the Republican race for Public Service Commission, Place 2, Jim “Zig“ Zeigler and Chris Beeker will face each other in the runoff.
