Retirees Rally for Education Funding Relief
Hundreds of Alabama education retirees headed to State House, urging lawmakers to address rising costs and long-stalled benefits
Hundreds of retired educators from across the State gathered Tuesday at the Alabama State House to press lawmakers for long-awaited financial relief as costs continue to climb.
Retiree Day was organized by the Alabama Education Association in partnership with the Alabama Education Retirees Association. Attendees spent the day meeting with legislators, urging them to include meaningful funding relief in the State’s education budget.
Participants broke into small groups for direct conversations with elected officials, a format designed to give retirees a clear voice in the process. Organizers said those discussions are key, as many retirees face rising healthcare costs, inflation, and fixed incomes that have not kept pace in recent years.

The day closed with a rally on the Statehouse steps at 3:30 p.m., where retirees and supporters gathered to call for adequate and fair funding to support their financial well-being.
Advocates pointed to a long gap in cost-of-living adjustments as a central concern. Education retirees in Alabama have not received a permanent increase since 2006. A one-time bonus approved in 2022 offered brief relief, but organizers argued it fell short of addressing ongoing needs.
Retiree Day marked a coordinated push by AEA and AERA to highlight those concerns and press for action. For many in attendance, the message was simple: after decades in the classroom, they asked the State to follow through with steady, reliable support in retirement.
