U.S. Representative Dale Strong (R-AL-05) is applauding the House Appropriations Committee’s approval of the Fiscal Year 2027 Legislative Branch Appropriations Act, the seventh of 12 annual spending bills advanced by the committee this year.

The legislation cleared the committee during a markup on May 20 and now moves forward in the appropriations process. House Republicans say the measure aims to fund congressional operations while keeping spending in check and improving security across the Capitol complex.

“We have a fundamental responsibility to fund the government the right way, through regular order and with strict fiscal discipline,” Strong said. “Advancing the seventh appropriations bill through committee reflects House Republicans’ commitment to ending Washington’s usual crisis-governing.”

Strong, who serves on the House Appropriations Committee and the Legislative Branch Subcommittee, said the bill supports constituent services while increasing funding for security operations around the U.S. Capitol.

The bill includes funding increases for Capitol Police officers and civilian staff who support security operations. It also directs unused taxpayer funds from congressional office operations and constituent service accounts to be returned for debt and deficit reduction rather than redirected into additional spending.

The legislation would also reduce spending below last year’s enacted levels for House and joint congressional operations, part of a broader Republican push to advance individual appropriations bills through regular order instead of relying on large end-of-year spending packages.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole said the bill is designed to strengthen congressional operations while maintaining accountability.

“Our foremost duty is to our constituents – and the FY27 Legislative Branch bill equips the People’s House to uphold the trust placed in it through responsible governance and effective oversight,” Cole said in a committee statement.

The House Appropriations Committee approved the bill by a vote of 34-28. It now goes to the full House.
