U.S. Representative Dale Strong (R-AL-05) announced this week that he has secured $2,597,000 in federal funding to improve emergency preparedness at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children by providing new backup generator capacity for the facility.

The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security Appropriations legislation through the Community Project Funding process. Hospital leaders say the project will help ensure uninterrupted care during severe weather, natural disasters, and unexpected power outages.

Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children serves as North Alabama’s primary center for advanced pediatric and neonatal care. The facility provides specialized treatment for critically ill infants, children, and mothers from across North Alabama and southern Tennessee. The hospital includes a Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and a Regional Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As part of the Huntsville Hospital Health System, it is considered critical infrastructure because of its role in caring for vulnerable patients.

Strong toured the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit before announcing the funding and emphasized the importance of reliable emergency power for lifesaving medical services.

“Having served as a firefighter and EMT for decades, I’ve seen how severe weather and natural disasters can cause widespread power outages and put the lives of vulnerable patients at risk. For newborns in the NICU, children in critical care, and mothers depending on lifesaving treatment, even a brief interruption in power can be detrimental,” Strong said.

“This funding will help ensure the hospital can continue to care for our most vulnerable patients when they need it most, no matter the circumstances.”

Hospital officials welcomed the investment, noting that dependable backup power is essential to maintaining patient care during emergencies.

“This funding strengthens our ability to care for patients at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children when they need us most,” said Tracy Doughty, President and Chief Operating Offficer of Huntsville Hospital. “A reliable, modern generator is critical to ensuring continuity of care for newborns, children and women across North Alabama, even in the face of disaster or power disruption. We are grateful to Congressman Dale Strong and our federal partners for investing in the health and safety of North Alabama families.”

According to hospital officials, the existing emergency generator is more than five decades old and no longer meets the facility’s growing needs. The replacement unit will be significantly larger and capable of supporting the entire hospital during extended power outages.

The Women & Children project is part of nearly $36 million in Fiscal Year 2026 Community Project Funding that Strong says he has secured for Alabama’s 5th Congressional District. The funding package also includes transportation, public safety, water infrastructure, workforce development, and research projects throughout North Alabama.
