Birmingham, AL — The City of Birmingham invites proposals for its 2027-2028 Building Opportunities for Lasting Development (BOLD) funding program. Established in 2018, BOLD provides financial support to organizations dedicated to advancing economic development within the city through initiatives focused on five key focus areas: small businesses, workforce development, eliminating barriers, creative placemaking, and high-growth industries.
“The organizations rooted in Birmingham are key catalysts in moving our city toward meaningful, lasting transformation,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “We remain dedicated to funding efforts that expand economic opportunity and strengthen the overall quality of life in our communities. Maintaining our support for BOLD awardees is a deliberate commitment that strengthens resident empowerment, revitalizes neighborhoods, and contributes to a more unified, resilient Birmingham.”
Over the last eight years, BOLD has directly contributed $6.2 million to 66 local organizations. The program was recently allocated up to $1.5 million in the city’s FY27 budget.
“The BOLD program embodies Birmingham’s commitment to progress shaped by the community itself,” said Coreata' Houser, Director of the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity. “Its reach touches every corner of our neighborhoods, empowering residents, supporting local enterprises, and strengthening our long‑term vision for the city. For eight years, BOLD awardees have championed grassroots advancement, driving economic mobility and cultivating a more dynamic, connected Birmingham.
The BOLD program supports local businesses and organizations as they develop strong, evidence-based proposals by providing technical assistance workshops and one-on-one guidance during designated office hours. All submissions undergo a comprehensive review conducted by a committee composed of representatives from the mayor’s office and the city council administration. As a highly competitive initiative, BOLD prioritizes applicants who demonstrate meaningful community impact, a clear strategy for economic growth, and a commitment to expanding opportunities throughout the City of Birmingham.
