Former State Rep. Patricia Todd praised Alicia Escott Lumpkin as a new voice for District 60 ahead of the May 19 primary

Former Alabama lawmaker Patricia Todd has endorsed Democratic candidate Alicia Escott Lumpkin in the race for Alabama House District 60, adding another prominent name to Lumpkin’s growing list of supporters ahead of the May 19 primary election.

Todd, who represented Birmingham in the Alabama House from 2006 to 2014 and later served as Vice Chair of the Alabama Democratic Party, announced her support Wednesday. In a statement released by the campaign, Todd praised Lumpkin’s record of community service and described her as part of a new generation of leadership in Alabama politics.

“There are moments in politics when we have the opportunity to choose not just a candidate, but the kind of future we want for our communities,” Todd said. “I believe Alicia Escott Lumpkin represents that future, and that is why I am proud to endorse her for Alabama House District 60.”

Todd said her years in the Legislature taught her that leadership requires more than visibility.

“During my years serving in the Alabama Legislature, I learned that effective leadership is not about the loudest voice in the room, it’s about who is willing to do the work, listen to people, and fight for communities that too often feel overlooked,” Todd said. “Alicia has demonstrated those qualities time and time again through her commitment to public service and community engagement.”

Todd also pointed to issues she said matter most to District 60 residents, including economic growth, education, health care access and public safety.

“District 60 deserves leadership that is focused on bringing people together and addressing the real issues impacting working families every day, economic development, safer neighborhoods, access to opportunity, quality education, healthcare, and protecting the dignity of every person in our community,” Todd said. “Alicia understands those priorities because she comes from the community she hopes to serve, and she has shown a genuine passion for making life better for the people of this district.”

Lumpkin is challenging four-term incumbent Juandalynn Givan in the Democratic primary. The Birmingham native has centered her campaign on economic opportunity, infrastructure, neighborhood investment and health care access.

Todd said Lumpkin reflects “an important new generation of leadership in Alabama, one grounded in compassion, collaboration, and progress.”

“We need leaders who are willing to move our State forward while ensuring no one is left behind,” Todd said. “Alicia has the energy, vision, and heart to be that kind of representative.”

The endorsement follows several others Lumpkin has secured in recent weeks, including support from Sheila Tyson and former Birmingham Mayor Richard Arrington Jr..

“As someone who spent years fighting for equality, fairness, and representation in Alabama, I know how important it is to elect people with courage and integrity,” Todd said. “Alicia Escott Lumpkin has both, and I have no doubt she will serve District 60 with dedication and purpose.”

“I’m honored to support her campaign and encourage the people of District 60 to join me in voting for Alicia Escott Lumpkin for State House.”
