Wahl Responds to Allen Attacks, Negative Tactics in Lt. Gov Race
John Wahl calls Wes Allen’s statements “false,” sets the record straight and lays out his position on taxes, spending
Former Alabama Republican Party Chair and candidate for Lieutenant Governor John Wahl is responding to a number of highly-charged statements made about him by Secretary of State Wes Allen, who is also running for Lt. Governor.
Wahl reached out to ALPolitics.com and provided the following statement:
“Wes Allen has been incredibly negative toward me throughout this campaign, and the voters of Alabama have seen it. From mocking my first name to making false attacks against my family and my faith, Wes has chosen personal attacks over the truth.
“I am not going to engage in personal insults, but I will talk about public policy and voting records, because the people of Alabama deserve the truth.
“Wes Allen voted to raise taxes multiple times. He spent taxpayer money promoting himself. And he refused to endorse Donald Trump.
“Now he is falsely attacking my farm and making claims that show he does not even understand basic state law. Under Alabama Code, farms are not required to have a business license in the state of Alabama. In fact, Section 11 51 105 actually makes it illegal for local governments to require a license for a farm business. That is basic Alabama law, and it is deeply concerning that our own Secretary of State either does not know that or is willing to ignore it for a political attack.
“Wes Allen also made the false and completely out of touch claim that by opposing tax increases, I supported going further into debt. This is exactly what is wrong with career politicians. They assume the only options are raising taxes or going deeper into debt. As a conservative outsider, I believe in a third option: cutting wasteful spending and forcing government to live within its means.
“I believe we could have addressed Alabama’s infrastructure needs without raising the gas taxes. But let’s be clear, raising the gas tax was not the only time Wes Allen voted to raise the burden on taxpayers. He supported multiple tax increases, fee increases, and higher property taxes.
“The bottom line is simple: I will never vote to raise your taxes, and I will never be irresponsible with your taxpayer dollars. Alabama needs leaders who understand small businesses, farmers, and working families, not career politicians who attack them and raise their taxes.”
