Wess Brothers Back Larriett in Senate Runoff
Brothers of Democratic Senate candidate Everett Wess endorse runoff rival Dakarai Larriett, citing concerns about trust and character
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Dakarai Larriett announced Thursday that he has received endorsements from two brothers of his runoff opponent, Birmingham attorney Everett Wess, in a development that adds a personal dimension to Alabama’s closely watched Democratic Senate primary runoff.
Kelvin Wess and Maurice Wess have publicly endorsed Larriett ahead of the June 16 runoff election, in a video released June 4. The endorsements come as Democratic voters prepare to choose a nominee for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat.
“I put my vote behind Dakarai, a man with integrity and a man with ethical principles,” said Maurice Wess.
Kelvin Wess offered a sharper critique of his brother’s candidacy.
“He should not be trusted with public office. Character matters, integrity matters. How a person treats their own family matters,” Kelvin Wess said.

The endorsements arrive during the final weeks of a runoff campaign between Larriett, a businessman and community advocate from Alabama, and Wess, an attorney and municipal judge from the Birmingham area. The two candidates advanced from a four-person Democratic primary field after neither received a majority of the vote in the May 19 election. Wess finished first with roughly 39.6 percent of the vote, while Larriett received about 29.1 percent, sending the race to a June 16 runoff.
Larriett said the endorsements reflect a broader concern about public confidence in elected officials.
“Trust in our leaders has eroded, and it is touching to receive such a heartfelt endorsement from the Wess family,” Larriett stated. “Their support underscores a collective commitment to moving beyond divisive politics and working towards a brighter future for all Alabamians.”
Larriett also used the announcement to emphasize his campaign’s message of integrity and cooperation.
“In these times of uncertainty, we must choose leaders who prioritize honesty and collaboration over scandal and conflict,” Larriett said.
Larriett, an entrepreneur and University of Alabama graduate, has campaigned on issues including healthcare access, education, workforce development, and community-focused public safety initiatives.
Wess, a Birmingham attorney, has highlighted his experience in law, public service, and the judicial system during the campaign.
The Democratic runoff is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16. The winner will advance to the November general election for the Senate seat being vacated by outgoing Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who chose to run for Governor rather than seek reelection.
