Why Jay Mitchell Should Be Alabama’s Next Attorney General
After recently interviewing Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, I came away impressed by both his qualifications and his vision for the future of Alabama’s Attorney General’s Office.
One of the primary goals of Angela’s Sweet Tea and Politics is to give Alabama voters an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates seeking public office so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. I take that responsibility seriously because elections matter, and the people we elect today will shape the future of Alabama for years to come.
That is why I make every effort to interview candidates personally and allow voters to hear their positions in their own words. After recently interviewing Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, I came away impressed by both his qualifications and his vision for the future of Alabama’s Attorney General’s Office.
At a time when the Attorney General plays an increasingly important role in defending Alabama’s conservative values, protecting constitutional rights, fighting crime, and standing up to federal overreach when necessary, voters need someone with proven legal experience and a deep understanding of the law. Jay Mitchell made a compelling case that he is uniquely qualified for that responsibility.
One of the strongest points Mitchell emphasized during our interview was his extensive courtroom experience. He noted that he is the only candidate in the runoff with more than two decades of experience on both sides of the bench. Before serving on the Alabama Supreme Court, he spent sixteen years handling major cases before judges and juries. He then spent more than six years as a Justice on Alabama’s highest court, dealing with some of the most significant legal issues facing our state.
That experience matters.
The Attorney General is not simply a political officeholder. The Attorney General is Alabama’s chief law enforcement officer and chief courtroom lawyer. The person elected must be prepared on day one to defend Alabama’s interests in court, interpret complex legal issues, and aggressively advocate for the people of this state. Mitchell’s legal background gives him a depth of experience that few candidates can match.
Another area that stood out to me was his judicial philosophy. Mitchell spoke extensively about his commitment to constitutional conservatism, textualism, and originalism. In simple terms, he believes judges and attorneys should faithfully apply the law as written rather than inserting personal opinions or political preferences into legal decisions. That philosophy reflects the same constitutional principles championed by conservative jurists such as Justice Scalia, Justice Thomas, and Justice Alito.
For conservative voters who are concerned about activist judges and government overreach, that commitment to interpreting the law as written should be encouraging.
Mitchell also discussed what he sees as the future role of the Attorney General’s Office. Rather than remaining in a defensive posture, he believes Alabama should be aggressively advancing conservative priorities and protecting its citizens. One issue he repeatedly emphasized was protecting children from predators and ensuring that any platforms, organizations, or technologies that facilitate the exploitation of children are held accountable.
I also want to make a personal note.
Throughout this race, I was a strong supporter of Pamela Casey. I believed then, and still believe, that Pam Casey is one of the most qualified prosecutors Alabama has to offer. I was disappointed when she did not advance to the runoff election. However, Pam made the decision to endorse Jay Mitchell, and after sitting down and interviewing him for Angela’s Sweet Tea and Politics, I understand why.
The same qualities that impressed me about Pam—respect for the law, courtroom experience, conservative principles, and a commitment to serving the people of Alabama—are qualities I also saw in Jay Mitchell. Hearing him discuss his vision for the Attorney General’s Office helped me understand why a respected career prosecutor like Pamela Casey believes he is the right choice for Alabama.
Another point Mitchell raised was accountability. He stressed that Alabama’s Attorney General should answer to the people of Alabama and remain focused on the interests of Alabama families. His campaign message consistently centered on serving Alabama citizens first and ensuring the Attorney General’s Office remains focused on protecting the people it represents.
What stood out most to me during this interview was Mitchell’s command of the law and his ability to clearly explain why experience matters. He wasn’t speaking in rehearsed political talking points. He was speaking from decades of real-world legal experience and from a genuine understanding of how our legal system works.
As voters prepare to make their decision in this important runoff election, they should ask themselves a simple question: Who is best prepared on day one to serve as Alabama’s chief law enforcement officer and chief courtroom lawyer?
After listening to Justice Jay Mitchell discuss his qualifications, his conservative judicial philosophy, his commitment to protecting children, and his vision for moving Alabama forward, I believe he has made a strong case that he is the right choice to be Alabama’s next Attorney General.
That is why Jay Mitchell earned my attention, my respect, and ultimately my endorsement in this race. Alabama deserves an Attorney General who knows the law, knows the courtroom, and is prepared to fight for the people of this state from the very first day in office. Based on what I heard during our conversation, I believe Jay Mitchell is that candidate.
