Data Center Revolt Bus Tour Comes to Bessemer
Local, national speakers addressed Sunday evening’s gathering in McCalla
The AI Data Center Revolt Bus Tour came to Alabama on Sunday evening to encourage citizens to make their voices heard at both the local and national level.
The Bus Tour is a project of Humans First, a grassroots, America First organization of everyday Americans fighting to put the future of Al in the hands of the people, not unaccountable tech elites.
The speakers addressed concerns about the effects of data centers on rural communities, the environment, the nearby residents, and the loss of their input into the political decision-making process surrounding these data centers.
Kathy Latham, Texas State Director of Humans First, said that "Rural America is under attack by big tech. They want us. They want our land. They don't care about us.”
Ann Eubank of Alabama Legislative Watchdogs and the Beneath the Surface podcast spoke to the crowd. Eubank later told ALPolitics.com that “The Race is on, but it’s not with China. It’s the race to build as many data centers as they can before We the People catch on to the fact that these things are required to hold the data from the surveillance state. Collect it all! Everyone! Everything! Build the pile to teach the advanced AI intelligence algorithms so they can control the population with that information.”
“Corporations are spending billions to make the Big 5 tech trillionaires richer and we the people poorer while destroying our way of life and damaging our environment with impunity,” Eubank concluded.
Joseph Baker, one of the co-organizers of the event, said, "Hopefully people have a renewed sense of urgency as it concerns the development of AI and data centers in communities. You know, this is potentially going to be a deeply transformative technology. The unfortunate thing is, is that as it is being built out and as it is being kind of rolled out into the community, it’s causing a lot of negative effects, both directly at the facilities and the surrounding areas there, but also in the people that are using it.”
A number of participants Sunday evening were Bessemer residents who have been actively organizing against the proposed Project Marvel hyperscale data center which has generated significant controversy recently.
