Montgomery, ALA. - Citing his strong opposition to honest election reform, Republican secretary of state candidate Caroleene Dobson on Thursday said allowing Shomari Figures to represent the state’s Second Congressional District would “subject Alabama and the rest of the nation to fraudulent ballot harvesting, rampant election fraud, and allowing illegal immigrants to register to vote.”

Dobson noted multiple congressional votes Figures has cast against commonsense ballot security measures, including his strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, commonly known as the SAVE Act, which requires applicants to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

“Shomari Figures has routinely voted against the most basic ballot box protections that have come before Congress and even opposed requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote,” Dobson said. “If given the opportunity, Shomari Figures and his allies like Ilhan Omar, AOC, and Bernie Sanders would subject Alabama and the rest of the nation to fraudulent ballot harvesting, rampant election fraud, and allowing illegal immigrants to register to vote.”

“Electing Republican Rhett Marques to the Second Congressional seat on November 3 will ensure that honestly cast votes are honestly counted and those who seek to cheat or taint our election system will experience the discomfort of living in a six foot by eight foot jail cell,” she said.

Dobson noted that Figures spoke against passage of Alabama’s law combatting ballot harvesting, which occurs when third-party individuals, teams, or workers, who are frequently paid and often use fraudulent means to gather them, submit volumes of pre-filled absentee voter applications to absentee ballot election managers.

Earlier this year, the Alabama attorney general announced the arrest of three women on a combined 17 counts of ballot harvesting and 20 counts of unlawful use of absentee ballots under an indictment that alleged each defendant falsified absentee ballot applications or verification documents and harvested the ballots of multiple individuals.

Historically, voter fraud in Alabama has been most commonly committed through abuse of the absentee balloting process, and most voter fraud prosecutions have involved absentee voter fraud.

In addition to his vote against the SAVE Act [HR 22, Roll Call #102, Passed 220-208, 4/10/25], Figures cast an opposing vote on at least one additional congressional measure that “requires individuals to provide documentary proof of citizenship, as well as photo identification, in order to vote.” [S 1383, Roll Call #69, Passed 218-213, 2/11/26]

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama announced on Thursday that two non-citizens, a Jamaican national who voted in the 2024 general election in Clarke County and a Peruvian national who voted in several elections, were arrested by federal agents for casting fraudulent ballots.

They face one year in prison if convicted of the charges.

At the same time he fought against requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, Figures also voted against nine bills that would have secured the U.S. border, deported illegal immigrants convicted of felony crimes, including human trafficking, and funded basic Homeland Security and border protection protocols.
