Troy, AL – Doug Jones teamed up with U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures Tuesday evening for a town hall at Troy University hosted by the Troy University College Democrats and Pike County Democrats. The two took questions from voters, community members, and students about the November election and the issues voters are facing.

During the town hall, the discussion focused heavily on redistricting and the fight over Black voting power in Alabama. Alabama Republicans changed the state’s congressional map earlier this year following the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, dismantling the second Black-opportunity district established after the Court’s 2023 decision in Allen v. Milligan. Figures won that district in 2024, giving Alabama two Black members of Congress. Even though he is running in a new district, on Tuesday night, both Figures and Jones made clear they believe it is still a race he can win.

Jones then leaned into reaching voters in neglected parts of the state as an opportunity for candidates heading into November.

“We are moving into areas that Democrats haven't gone in a while. That's why we're doing these town halls,” said Jones. “We are not just going out trying to preach to the choir. We're talking to people, and we're listening to people. That's the critical piece.”

Being in Pike County carried special significance as the birthplace of civil rights legend and longtime Congressman John Lewis. Lewis’s nephew, Ron Lewis, was among those in attendance Tuesday evening.

Figures also pointed to the energy surrounding Jones’s campaign heading into November.

“Doug Jones is running one of the most exciting and inspiring campaigns that we have seen for governor in recent memory,” Figures said. “And that energy is what’s going to lead the top of the ticket in November. And I am thrilled to stand in the winner’s circle with you in November.”
