Firefighters Back Robertson for Attorney General
State firefighters endorse Katherine Robertson, citing strong support for first responders and concerns over past court ruling on legal immunity
The Professional Fire Fighters Association of Alabama has announced its endorsement of Republican candidate Katherine Robertson for Alabama Attorney General, pointing to her support for first responders and concerns over a past court ruling tied to one of her opponents.
In a statement, PFFA President David Harer said the group’s backing comes down to a clear standard.
“The Professional Fire Fighters of Alabama base our endorsements on one simple principle — we support those who support us,” Harer said. “Katherine Robertson has demonstrated a strong commitment to public safety and to the men and women who serve our communities each day, and she stands not only with firefighters across Alabama, but with law enforcement and other first responders, as well.”
Harer also referenced a controversial decision authored by Jay Mitchell during his time on the Alabama Supreme Court. The ruling, Ex parte Pinkard, drew criticism from public safety groups for limiting qualified immunity protections for first responders.

According to the Association, that decision exposed firefighters and other emergency personnel to greater legal risk while performing their duties. In response, the Alabama Legislature passed a measure during its 2025 session to restore those protections.
Harer said the modern demands of emergency response make those safeguards more important than ever.
“In today’s fire service, we no longer carry only fire hoses and EMS bags—we now carry ballistic vests to ensure our own safety while responding to increasingly complex and dangerous incidents — and Katherine Robertson understands these realities and the importance of supporting those on the front lines of public safety,” Harer said. “Firefighters across our state rely on leaders who protect those who protect others, and that includes strengthening legal protections and ensuring accountability within our system. Katherine Robertson has shown she will be that advocate.”
Robertson welcomed the endorsement and said she intends to continue advocating for first responders across Alabama.
“The PFFA represents professional firefighters in cities and towns across Alabama and advocates for the needs of first responders of all kinds in every corner of the state, and I am proud to carry their endorsement,” Robertson said. “Fire fighters and other first responders may rest secure in the knowledge that I will always push for the immunities and protections their jobs demand.”
