Greater Hoover Rotary Club Marks One Year Anniversary
Inducts new officers, touts accomplishments and looks to a bright future
The Greater Hoover Rotary Club marked its first anniversary on Friday, July 10 by inducting new officers, celebrating a positive first year and anticipating what the next year will bring.
Founding President Tanveer Patel, who hosted the morning meeting in her home, spoke about how the first year of any organization was always the most important. She described how the goal of the group had been “first to crawl, then to walk, then to run” with their service projects, and that she believed they were doing well in that regard.
Patel discussed how the club’s partnerships with Hoover Helps and Neighborhood Bridges were already bearing fruit, and the future of expanding this collaboration — especially with Neighborhood Bridges — was extremely promising.
Patel also emphasized that the Greater Hoover Rotary Club would be looking towards not only local but international service projects in the months and years to come, and would also be working to increase the involvement of area youth, to build the next generation of leaders. She related that they had had success in their initial efforts to do this, and that she felt this model would serve the club well going forward.
Adil Patel spoke briefly about the club’s collaboration with Neighborhood Bridges to facilitate aiding children in need in obtaining necessary supplies. This program is just being launched, and a formal announcement about it will be made soon.
Nancy Gordecke, President of the Birmingham Rotary Club, spoke to the group, commending them on their first year. She discussed how, at the recent Rotary International Convention in Taiwan, the 37,000 Rotarians there gave her a sense of the global reach of Rotary, and hoe many lives it touches. Gordecke pointed out that Jefferson County now has fifteen Rotary Clubs, and she is looking forward to increasing countywide cooperation in 2026 and beyond.
Gordecke then awarded Rotary pins to the new officers of the Greater Hoover Club:
- Samata Shah — President
- Dr. Kanti Sunkavalli — VP and President-Elect
- David Marshall — Secretary
- Tab Halim — Treasurer
New President Samata Shah addressed the group, saying that “Rotary is not just a small community. There’s just so much more than our twenty member group.” She went on the day “my word for the day is belief,” and that she would be focused on growing the club over the next year.
“I think each one of us should think about giving back to the community, whichever way they are capable of. Our Greater Hoover Rotary club is new, small but mighty. We have givers hearts and brilliant minds. This combination is very powerful and I am honored to be part of this group,” Shah said.
New Vice President/President-Elect Dr Kanti Sunkavalli said that, “The Greater Hoover Rotary, in its short tenure, has already successfully bridged generations together for a greater common good. It is something that we all should aspire to, and I am proud to be a part of.”
“It’s been the honor of my life to serve as the Founding President of the Greater Hoover Rotary Club. Thank you for taking a leap of faith and helping build something new from the ground up. I’m proud of the foundation we’ve laid together, and I can’t wait to watch this club grow for years to come,” said Founding President, and now Past President, Tanveer Patel.
Rotary International is a global service organization with over 1.4 million members and 46,000 Clubs who support their local communities in a variety of ways. To learn more about Rotary International, go to Rotary.org.
