Hooper Sees Trump Shaping Alabama GOP Primaries

With Alabama's Aug. 11 Republican primary drawing near, veteran Republican strategist Perry O. Hooper Jr. says President Donald Trump's endorsements, voter turnout, and election security will play major roles in determining the outcome of several of the State's most closely watched races.

Hooper joined journalist Brandon Moseley and political commentator Christopher Peek for a wide-ranging discussion on the BCS: State of Alabama podcast, examining the congressional contests, Republican strategy, and the issues they believe will define the final days of the campaign.

Much of the conversation centered on Alabama's special election for the 6th Congressional District, where political newcomer Case Dixon is challenging five-term incumbent U.S. Representative Gary Palmer in the Republican primary.

The panel predicted Palmer would ultimately prevail, pointing to his long record in Congress, strong support among Republican voters, and close alignment with President Trump. They argued Dixon faces an uphill battle despite running an energetic campaign built around a more independent, America First message.

Hooper noted that special elections often produce low turnout, making organization and voter contact especially important. He suggested campaigns capable of identifying and mobilizing reliable Republican voters could hold a decisive advantage on Election Day.

The panel argued that Democratic candidates continue to face significant challenges in many Statewide contests because of the State's Republican voting trends, while also discussing internal divisions within the Democratic Party and how those disputes could affect future elections.

Hooper urged Republicans to continue emphasizing voter identification requirements and election security measures, pointing to the proposed Save America Act as an example of legislation he believes should remain a top priority.
