ATHENS, AL — Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor John Wahl today criticized Doug Jones' recent comments supporting efforts to phase out school choice, saying Alabama families deserve the freedom to make decisions about their children's education without government interference.

“Doug Jones should be ashamed of himself for wanting to take away educational opportunities from Alabama families. Parents, not government bureaucrats, should decide what is best for their children. Alabama has taken an important step forward by expanding school choice, and Doug Jones would take us backward,” said Wahl.

School choice and parental rights have become major issues across the country, as families increasingly demand greater control over their children's education. Alabama took a bold step forward with the passage of the CHOOSE Act, giving parents more options and helping ensure that educational opportunities are not determined solely by a family's income or ZIP code.

“For generations, lower-income families often had no realistic opportunity to send their children to private schools or pursue alternatives to the traditional public school system. School choice is changing that. Thanks to the leadership of the Alabama Legislature, families from all backgrounds now have greater access to educational opportunities that were once financially out of reach. Doug Jones' plan would take away opportunities for low-income families and limit the educational options available to their children. Your economic background or ZIP code should never define the quality of your children's education, and that's why I am such a strong supporter of school choice,” Wahl continued.

Wahl emphasized that supporting school choice does not mean abandoning Alabama's public schools. Rather, it means recognizing that every child is different and that parents should have the ability to choose the educational environment that best meets their child's needs.

“I am a strong supporter of public education, and I believe we must continue prioritizing the success of our public schools and the future of our children. But supporting public education should never mean taking choices away from parents. Attacking the CHOOSE Act and trying to roll back parents' rights is exactly the kind of backward thinking that continues to fail Alabama families,” Wahl said.

“As Lieutenant Governor, I will fight to protect parental rights, defend school choice, and ensure Alabama families continue to have the freedom to make decisions about their children's education. Our children are not the property of the government, and their future should never be dictated by unelected bureaucrats. Parents know their children best, and they deserve to be in the driver's seat when it comes to their education.”
