Public-private initiative would bring affordable space for small businesses, trades training, veterans, and nonprofits to House District 4; host site to be chosen through an open community competition

MADISON, Ala. - Hanu Karlapalem, Democratic nominee for Alabama State House District 4, today unveiled his vision for The Affordable Campus, a community and economic development initiative he has been developing for over a decade, and invited residents across House District 4 to help shape it at a community town hall at Blue Apple Books in downtown Madison on Wednesday, October 14. It is the first of several town halls he plans to hold across the district.

"For ten years, I have believed there is a better way to bring development to our communities, one built on transparency, local ownership, and shared benefit instead of secrecy and speculation," Karlapalem said. "That is The Affordable Campus."

The Affordable Campus is a public-private partnership model that gives every city and community in House District 4 the chance to compete for affordable, multi-use space serving small businesses, nonprofits, students, veterans, and working families. It will be built in HD4.

THE FOUR GOALS

• Start something.

• Learn a trade or a craft.

• Serve those who served.

• Build community infrastructure.

The idea is not new for Karlapalem. It traces back to his proposed Start Up Madison (SUM), a phased public-private innovation complex in 2016, modeled after Philadelphia's StartUp PHL initiative. Over the past decade, the concept has grown from a single-city proposal into a three-county model built for all of House District 4.

Cities and counties in HD4 will compete to host it, and the winning site will be chosen based on documented community need and readiness.
