Dr. Angelo “Doc” Mancuso has cleared a major hurdle in his bid for the Alabama House of Representatives, with the Alabama Secretary of State's Office confirming that his campaign submitted enough valid petition signatures to qualify for the November 2026 general election ballot as an independent candidate in House District 7.

The confirmation marks the latest chapter in a contentious race that has drawn attention across North Alabama since Mancuso was removed from the Republican primary ballot earlier this year.

According to the campaign, the Secretary of State's Office notified Mancuso that enough signatures had been verified to satisfy Alabama's ballot access requirements for independent candidates.

Mancuso originally entered the House District 7 race as a Republican challenger to incumbent State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough (R-Trinity). However, following a ballot challenge, the Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee voted to disqualify him from the Republican primary despite support from the Lawrence County Republican Executive Committee, which formally urged State party leaders to allow voters to decide the race at the ballot box.

After his removal from the GOP primary, Mancuso announced he would continue his campaign as an independent candidate and began organizing a district-wide petition drive to secure a place on the November ballot. Hundreds of volunteers participated in the effort across Lawrence, Morgan, and Colbert counties.

In a statement following the signature verification, Mancuso said the campaign's success reflected voter frustration with what he described as political interference in the election process.

"Ernie Yarbrough and his cronies thought they could rig the process and deny voters a choice," Mancuso said. "What they failed to understand is that the people of District 7 are tired of politics as usual. Their efforts to remove me from the ballot only strengthened our campaign and energized voters across the district. Thanks to the support of thousands of citizens, we have cleared a major hurdle toward earning our place on the November ballot, and now the voters—not political insiders—will decide who represents them in Montgomery."

Mancuso, a dermatologic cancer surgeon and former state representative, has centered his campaign on several local and regional issues. Among his priorities are establishing a trauma emergency center in Lawrence County, expanding education and workforce development opportunities, improving transportation infrastructure, and recruiting new industry and jobs to the region.

The November election will now feature a head-to-head contest between Mancuso and Yarbrough. House District 7 includes all of Lawrence County and portions of Morgan and Colbert counties.

The race is expected to be closely watched, particularly after the unusually public dispute over Mancuso's Republican primary eligibility. Since launching his independent campaign, Mancuso has argued that voters should have the final say in choosing their representative, while Yarbrough has defended the Republican Party's authority to enforce its candidate qualification rules.
