Moore Backs FY27 NDAA, Highlights Alabama Defense Wins

U.S. Representative Barry Moore (R-AL-01) voted Wednesday in favor of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 8800, saying the measure strengthens the nation's armed forces while delivering major investments to Alabama's military installations and defense industry. The House-approved bill now advances to the Senate, where lawmakers will reconcile differences between the two chambers before sending a final version to the president.

The annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) sets defense policy and authorizes military programs, construction projects and weapons procurement. The FY2027 measure includes investments in military readiness, modernization, support for service members and their families, and improvements to the nation's defense industrial base.

Moore said the legislation also carries significant benefits for Alabama, where the defense sector supports tens of thousands of jobs, including shipbuilding at Austal USA in Mobile, aerospace manufacturing, Army aviation at Fort Novosel, and missile and space operations centered at Redstone Arsenal.

"Peace through strength begins with a military that is focused on winning wars, not woke politics," Moore said. "This year's National Defense Authorization Act gives our service members the tools, training, and support they need to defend our nation, deters Communist China and our other adversaries, strengthens our defense industrial base, and ensures America remains the strongest fighting force on Earth. For Alabama, this bill also supports the soldiers, sailors, civilian workers, shipbuilders, and defense manufacturers whose work is essential to our national security and our state's economy. I was proud to support this legislation because our troops deserve our unwavering support, and the American people deserve a government that puts our national security first."

Among the Alabama-specific priorities authorized in the legislation are:

• $53 million for a new Access Control Point at Anniston Army Depot to improve security and support the depot's logistics and maintenance mission.
• $450 million for a new U.S. Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, further expanding Alabama's role in space and missile defense.
• $250 million for a new Space Force operational facility at Redstone Arsenal to strengthen U.S. space capabilities.
• $90 million for a power generation and microgrid project at Redstone Arsenal to improve energy resilience for critical defense operations.
• Funding for six additional UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and seven additional CH-47 Chinook helicopters, supporting Army aviation modernization and Fort Novosel's pilot training mission.
• $44 million for an addition to the Maxwell Air Force Base Elementary/Middle School to improve educational facilities for military families.

The NDAA has been enacted annually for more than six decades and serves as Congress's primary vehicle for setting national defense policy. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) has described this year's measure as one that strengthens military readiness, modernizes the force and rebuilds the nation's defense industrial base.
