U.S. Representative Dale Strong (R-AL-05) announced that the House Appropriations Committee has approved legislation containing $16.5 million for transportation and infrastructure projects across North Alabama, advancing the funding package for consideration by the full U.S. House of Representatives.

Strong, who serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, said the investments are aimed at supporting the region's rapid growth while addressing transportation and infrastructure needs.

“As North Alabama leads in growth, innovation, and economic opportunity, I am committed to ensuring our infrastructure investments keep pace with that success. I am proud to advance targeted investments for North Alabama that reduce traffic congestion, support our growing communities, and speed the delivery of transformational transportation projects,” said Rep. Strong.

Strong said the funding package would support road improvements, airport infrastructure, workforce training, and energy projects across the Tennessee Valley.

“This funding will improve critical roadways in Lawrence, Morgan, and Madison Counties; expand key transportation corridors in Huntsville, Madison, and Decatur; enhance infrastructure and investment at Huntsville International Airport; and support long-term energy reliability by investing in a new natural gas pipeline. I will always work to strengthen the Tennessee Valley’s infrastructure, support continued economic growth, and improve quality of life for the families, workers, and businesses who call North Alabama home,” Strong continued.

The funding was approved during committee markup of the Fiscal Year 2027 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill and includes the following North Alabama projects:

  • $500,000 for Lawrence County to resurface deteriorated roadway sections, replace failing culverts, and refurbish roadways on Lawrence County Road 434, County Road 700 (Cooperage Way), and County Road 222.
  • $3,000,000 for the North Alabama Public Energy District to begin construction of a 137-mile natural gas pipeline to increase energy capacity and reliability in the region.
  • $2,000,000 for the City of Madison to expand Wall Triana Highway from two lanes to three lanes, including a continuous center turn lane across approximately 2.6 miles.
  • $1,000,000 for the City of Decatur to make improvements to Bibb Garrett Road–Airport Road.
  • $4,000,000 for Madison County to widen two heavily traveled sections of Jeff Road to help reduce congestion caused by continued population growth.
  • $500,000 for the City of Huntsville to extend State Route 255 from U.S. Highway 231/431 to County Road 93.
  • $1,000,000 for the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority to construct an aircraft apron and connector taxiway.
  • $3,000,000 for Madison County to widen Blake Bottom Road from two lanes to five lanes, including a center turn lane.
  • $500,000 for Calhoun Community College to complete a facility build-out supporting high-demand healthcare workforce training programs.
  • $1,000,000 for Madison County to widen a 2.44-mile section of State Route 53 from Harvest Road to Old Railroad Bed Road.

Beyond the North Alabama projects, the broader FY 2027 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development bill includes national investments in highways, airports, rail systems, maritime infrastructure, and air traffic control modernization.

According to the House Appropriations Committee, the legislation would:

  • Invest in transportation safety by providing the Federal Aviation Administration with resources to build a modern air traffic control system, hire 2,300 new air traffic controllers, and replace aging infrastructure.
  • Redirect $7.9 billion from previously authorized Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act programs toward transportation safety and reliability projects.
  • Refocus housing assistance programs through the Department of Housing and Urban Development while maintaining support for vulnerable populations.
  • Provide more than $6.3 billion in new budget authority for highways, rail systems, and airports.

The legislation now moves to the full House for consideration as lawmakers continue work on federal spending bills for Fiscal Year 2027.
