Strong Backs Homeland Security Funding Bill
House panel advances FY27 Homeland Security bill with funding for border security, counter-drone programs, and disaster response
U.S. Representative Dale Strong (R-AL-05), is highlighting the advancement of the Fiscal Year 2027 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill after it cleared the House Appropriations Committee.
Strong, who serves on the Committee, said the legislation would provide funding for border security, immigration enforcement, homeland defense programs, and emergency preparedness efforts. The bill also includes support for counter-drone technology, an area where North Alabama has become a national leader through its defense and aerospace industries.
“Keeping Americans safe starts with securing our borders, enforcing our laws, and staying ahead of emerging threats,” said Representative Dale Strong. “This bill delivers a comprehensive approach – providing the resources to strengthen immigration enforcement and meet today’s complex security challenges. From bolstering counter-drone capabilities that North Alabama is leading to securing major events like the 2028 Olympics, this legislation ensures our law enforcement and first responders have the tools they need to protect our communities.”

The legislation provides $439 million to maintain a force of 22,000 U.S. Border Patrol agents. It also includes $3.8 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations to support efforts to detain and remove criminal and other removable illegal immigrants.
The measure would increase resources aimed at stopping the flow of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into the United States. It also provides support for investigations targeting human trafficking operations, forced labor schemes, and child exploitation networks.
Beyond border enforcement, the bill includes funding for homeland defense initiatives. Among its provisions are investments in small unmanned aircraft and counter-unmanned aircraft systems designed to address evolving drone threats.
The legislation would also fully fund a military pay raise for members of the U.S. Coast Guard and provide money to modernize baggage screening equipment and technology infrastructure at commercial airports across the country.
Strong said the bill strengthens partnerships between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to improve coordination on immigration enforcement and homeland security operations.
The measure also seeks to improve national preparedness for major events and natural disasters. Funding is included for security planning and law enforcement support tied to the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
In addition, the bill directs support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to strengthen disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts nationwide. It also increases grant funding for local firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
The Homeland Security appropriations process is part of Congress’ annual effort to fund federal agencies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year. The bill must still move through the full House and Senate before becoming law.
