Remember when, during the Obama years, Republicans were screaming about the massive debt he was piling up being a financial “weapon of mass destruction?”

I do.

When Obama took office, the debt was about $10.63 trillion. During his eight years, it ballooned to $19.95 trillion — an increase of a whopping 88%!

And now, a measly $20 trillion debt seems like pocket change.

A couple of days ago, I was looking at some of the various spending bills being shoved through Congress before they take their August vacation, and a random thought wandered through…

Just when will the debt reach $40 trillion?

So I went to the National Debt Clock, and looked.

It was $39 trillion-plus and spinning up too fast for my eyes to follow.

Now, I could have gotten out pencil and paper, and a calculator, and done lots of tedious math to arrive at an answer I wouldn’t trust (math and I are old adversaries), but since I’m not that masochistic, I did what any sane person would do.

I asked AI.

Computers love math. It’s literally their bread and butter, and they’re much better at it than I. Since we have the technology, it only makes sense to use it while we can. So, this is what I asked:

Use the information from the National Debt clock at the attached link and other web resources as needed to answer this question: At what time — day, date, hour and minute — will the national Debt hit $40 trillion dollars? Here’s the link: https://www.usdebtclock.org

And here’s the answer I got, in less time than it took me to sneeze:

Based on the current figures from the U.S. Debt Clock and recent Treasury data, the United States is very close to the $40 trillion mark, with total gross federal debt at roughly $39.97–39.98 trillion.
Using the current rate of increase of approximately $5 billion per day (about $57,900 per second), the remaining $25–30 billion would be added in roughly 6 days.
Estimated milestone
Sunday, August 9, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)
This corresponds to:
Day: Sunday
Date: August 9, 2026
Time: Approximately 6:00 p.m. EDT

Well, that certainly woke me up!

Of course, the AI just had to hedge:

This is only an estimate. The National Debt does not rise at a perfectly steady rate. Treasury borrowing, tax receipts, large interest payments, and other cash flows can cause the debt to jump by billions of dollars at irregular intervals. The Treasury's official "Debt to the Penny" is updated once each business day, while the U.S. Debt Clock estimates the value continuously.
So the actual crossing could occur several hours earlier or later, or even by a day or two, depending on Treasury cash operations. However, based on today's growth rate, Sunday evening, August 9, 2026 is the best estimate.

Full disclosure, this rattled me, more than a bit. I knew hitting $40 trillion was inevitable. But, I expected it to be weeks or months down the road — maybe sometime around Halloween? But no.

It’s this weekend, only three (two, when this piece comes out) days away.

Sunday evening. 6:00 PM EDT, plus or minus.

That this is BAD goes without saying. AI also estimated this will be roughly 124% of the national GDP.

Does anybody in Congressional leadership care? If they do, they’re doing a great job of hiding it!

Let’s be brutally honest: this isn’t sustainable. The IMF, the CBO, the GAO, the Fed, anybody with a lick of sense — they all know how bad this is. Congress has to know, too. They’ve seen Thomas Massie’s lapel debt clock — but since he won’t be there after January, they can safely forget him. Here in Alabama, Case Dixon is the only Congressional candidate I’ve seen wearing one and actually talking seriously about the ticking debt bomb. All the rest are either competing to see how much they can love (Republicans) or hate (Democrats) Trump — and most Democrats (and a lot of alleged “good conservative Republicans”) are saying we need to spend more, more, MORE!

Typical pork barrel politics, and exactly what we do NOT need.

There are answers to this mess. There are solutions to be had…but none of them are “politically feasible,” much less palatable. They all require deep cuts beyond the fat, and into the meat and bones of too many sacred cows.

That will never happen — until reality makes it unavoidable.

The multi-trillion dollar question is just when that will happen, and the answer is…I don’t know. The entire world is now teetering on the edge of a global big-D Depression, thanks largely to this wonderful war against Iran we find ourselves in. The collapse of the economy due to the debt could be months or even years down the road. But, I rather doubt it.

I think it’s more likely it’s much sooner than we think, and will sneak up on us just like the debt hitting $40 trillion snuck up on me. And when that happens?

It’s not going to be pretty.

Enjoy your weekend!
