A new radio ad airing across the River Region puts former Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange front and center in support of Republican Attorney General candidate Katherine Robertson, tying his endorsement to rising concerns over crime and violence in the capital city.

The ad began running Tuesday and is part of Robertson’s broader campaign push. In it, Strange points to his years in office from 2009 to 2019, when he says public safety and community development were top priorities.

“When Todd Strange was mayor, Montgomery’s police department was fully staffed, and residents had a real sense of safety and security, but the total opposite is true today,” Robertson said in a statement tied to the ad rollout.

Robertson, who has worked in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for a decade, said she intends to take a more aggressive stance on violent crime if elected.

“As Attorney General, I am committed to stopping the gunshots, shootings, and murders that have become so commonplace in Montgomery, and I’ll help provide MPD officers with the support, resources, and assistance that the current mayor is denying them today,” she said.

She also highlighted Strange’s backing as a signal of confidence in her record and approach.

“Todd Strange is a strong leader with great character who always put the needs of Montgomery’s citizens first,” Robertson said. “His endorsement of my candidacy carries great weight across Montgomery, and I am determined to make him and everyone who lives here feel safe again.”

The 30-second ad features Strange speaking directly to voters. In it, he contrasts past conditions in Montgomery with current concerns over rising violence, while urging support for Robertson.

“I’m Todd Strange, and I had the privilege of being mayor of Montgomery from 2009 to 2019.

“As mayor, our top priorities were the safety of our city, and community development.

“Unfortunately, in recent years, violence has raised its ugly head. We’ve all seen what’s happening in our community. More has to be done to ensure the safety of Montgomery.

“For that reason, I’m backing Republican Katherine Robertson for Attorney General. She has stood tall for Montgomery and said ‘enough is enough.’

“Katherine has worked in the Attorney General's office for 10 years. I’ve seen her lead and help set up the Montgomery Area Crime Suppression Unit and help pass tough new laws to target gang activity.

“Katherine Robertson cares about Montgomery, and she will work with Coach Tuberville to put an end to violent crime and restore law and order. On May 19, join me in supporting Katherine Robertson for Attorney General.”

The ad is currently airing on radio stations across the River Region as the campaign heads deeper into the election cycle.
