Republican gubernatorial nominee Tommy Tuberville is making taxes the focus of his latest campaign ad, drawing a sharp contrast between his record and the policies he pins on Democrats.

The new ad, titled “Bumper Sticker,” was released this week as Tuberville heads into the final stretch of his campaign against Democratic nominee and former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones. The two will face off in Alabama’s Nov. 3 general election.

Tuberville boils his pitch down to two competing bumper stickers: Democrats offer “more taxes, less results,” he says, while his administration would deliver “less taxes, more results.”

“If Democrats slapped a slogan on their bumpers, it would be this one: ‘more taxes, less results,’” Tuberville opens in the ad. “My bumper looks a little different. As your Senator, I helped pass the largest working-class tax cuts in history and delivered Alabama its biggest tax refund ever. As your Governor, I’ll cut taxes even further, starting with the elimination of the State’s grocery tax. And I’ll audit every State dollar, ensuring your tax dollars deliver real results. ‘Less taxes, more results’ – that’s my slogan.”

The tax-cut claim refers in part to President Donald Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts, enacted in July 2025 with Tuberville’s support. The package made several prior tax cuts permanent and added new breaks tied to tips, overtime, Social Security income and interest on qualifying auto loans. It also expanded the Child Tax Credit and standard deduction.

The Treasury reported this summer that American workers and families claimed more than $82 billion in individual tax relief tied directly to the new law during its first filing season. Nearly 70% of filers receiving one of the law’s signature tax breaks earned less than $100,000.

Tuberville has repeatedly highlighted his role in the package. He also co-sponsored the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act before the broader tax package passed, an effort aimed at reducing federal taxes on overtime earnings.

But the most significant new State policy pledge in “Bumper Sticker” is Tuberville’s promise to eliminate Alabama’s remaining State sales tax on groceries.

Alabama currently levies a 2% State sales tax on qualifying food, down from the previous 4% rate. City and County sales taxes can still apply on top of the State levy.

Earlier this year, Gov. Kay Ivey signed legislation temporarily suspending the State grocery tax for May and June. The two-month tax holiday expired June 30, returning the State rate to 2%.

Tuberville is now pledging to finish the job by eliminating the State portion altogether if elected Governor.

The ad also adds another fiscal plank to his campaign platform: an audit of State spending. Tuberville says his administration would review “every State dollar” with the goal of making government more accountable for how taxpayer money is spent.

The message puts taxes and State spending squarely into the developing contrast between Tuberville and Jones as the gubernatorial campaign enters its final weeks.
