Former Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl announced this week that his campaign raised nearly half a million dollars during the first week following his first-place finish in Alabama’s Republican primary race for Lieutenant Governor.

According to the campaign, the total included more than $475,000 in direct contributions. The campaign also said the conservative advocacy group American Principles Project committed an additional $50,000 in independent expenditures to support Wahl heading into the runoff election.

The announcement comes after Wahl narrowly finished ahead of Wes Allen in the Republican primary earlier this month. In the May 19 primary, Wahl received 40.56% of the vote to Allen‘s 38.00%.

Wahl’s campaign said Allen raised $197,375 during the same post-primary period. As of this writing, financial filings show that the Wahl campaign had cash on hand of $716,094, while Allen’s campaign had $682,916 cash on hand.

“This campaign has never been about the political establishment. It has always been about the people of Alabama,” Wahl said in a campaign statement.

“I am humbled by the incredible support we have received since election night. Voters sent a clear message in the primary, and now donors, grassroots conservatives, and supporters across the state are stepping up to help us finish the job.”

Wahl entered the Lieutenant Governor’s race earlier this year after serving as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. During the campaign, he has focused heavily on conservative issues including lower taxes, parental rights, election integrity, and limited government.

The race between Wahl and Allen has become one of the most closely watched Republican runoff contests in Alabama this year. Allen, who currently serves as Secretary of State, entered the campaign with strong fundraising support and Statewide name recognition.

Wahl’s campaign described the latest fundraising totals as evidence of growing momentum ahead of the runoff election.

“Our campaign is united, energized, and ready for the fight ahead,” Wahl said. “Alabama needs a Lieutenant Governor who will stand up for working families, fight to cut taxes, defend our freedoms, protect our children, and never back down from our conservative values. That is exactly what I will do.”

Wahl has frequently described himself on the campaign trail as a Christian, farmer, small businessman, and conservative activist. During his time leading the Alabama Republican Party, he publicly aligned himself with President Donald Trump and supported several election integrity initiatives.
