Woodall Backs Zeigler in PSC Runoff Race
Former PSC candidate Brent Woodall endorses Jim Zeigler, citing campaign effort and voter engagement ahead of June 16 runoff
Former Alabama Public Service Commission candidate Brent Woodall has endorsed Jim “Zig” Zeigler in the Republican runoff for PSC Place 2, giving the former State Auditor support from the third-place finisher in last month's primary election.
Woodall announced his endorsement Saturday during remarks to the Shoals Republican Club, where he is a longtime member.
The endorsement comes ahead of Tuesday’s June 16 runoff between Zeigler and incumbent Commissioner Chris Beeker. In the May 19 Republican primary, Zeigler led the field with 44.8% of the vote. Beeker finished second with 24.5%, while Woodall placed third with 18.2%. Zeigler and Beeker advanced to the runoff following the primary.
Woodall, a former Public Service Commission staff member and retired attorney, said his decision was based on the candidates’ engagement with voters during the campaign:
“Over the last few months I had the opportunity to watch candidates for all the statewide races in Alabama. I saw the ones who worked hard and the ones who seemed to genuinely not care about campaigning. In the race for Alabama Public Service Commission Place 2, Jim Zeigler worked hard, attending various events and making himself available for questions and comments from concerned voters.
“His opponent, the incumbent in the race, showed up at only one event and, even on that occasion, left before speaking to those who had gathered to listen to the candidates. The attitude of the incumbent toward those people is the same attitude he seems to have for the rest of the people of Alabama; he just doesn’t seem to care about them. […]
“We need someone who will show up to work and actually earn a paycheck. […] I am asking Alabamians to join me in voting for a man who will work at the Public Service Commission, who will ask tough questions, and who will remember that he serves the people of our state. On June 16 I will be voting for Jim Zeigler, and I hope that they will too.”
The endorsement gives Zeigler support from a former opponent as both campaigns make their final push before Republican voters return to the polls for the June 16 runoff election.
