Alabama’s still Red, but…ALGOP needs to be worried
Another grumpy opinion by Managing Editor Dr. Bill Chitwood
So, yeah; Tuesday.
Midterms. Republican spanking. As predicted.
Not the worst in recent memory —that’s probably Barack Hussein Obama’s record to keep for a long time — but still epically bad for the GOP nationally.
Quite frankly, the thought of Speaker Jeffries makes me want to vomit — preferably all over Majority Leader Schumer. But, at least some of the Democratic Bolsheviks are staying true to form and eating their own already making noises about replacing Chuckie as Majority Leader.
If nothing else, it’ll be fun to watch. Remind me to stock up on popcorn, please.
Alabama stayed Red, but the margins were a lot slimmer than they were even four short years ago. Even worse for ALGOP, the Blue Shift hit Every. Single. County.
Exactly NONE shifted Red. They all went towards Blue — in some cases, by more than 20 points.
That’s something that ought to give every ALGOP stalwart nightmares, about elections yet to come.
It makes me glad that I went to Doug Jones’ Watch Party Tuesday night, instead of Tuberville’s coronation.
Well, that; and the rumor that Tuberville’s people weren’t letting the media out to go to the bathroom. I haven’t confirmed that, but I do hear things. And, given how much Lasix I’m on, trying that with me would have guaranteed that somebody — not me — would’ve had to mop.
Full disclosure: I went not because I thought Jones would win — the chances of that were small, at best — but my gut was telling me that what happened there would shape the course of Alabama politics for years to come. As it turns out, I was right.
Anyway…here’s what I saw at Jones’ event.
You know how some watch parties are just one step removed from a funeral? Tuesday at the Sheraton wasn’t like that at all.
Those people were happy. Hungry. Motivated. They cheered every time CNN showed another Democratic victory on the big screens. When the announcement came through that the Democrats had taken the Senate, it got a standing ovation. Even when the numbers looked bad for Jones, they didn’t wilt. When he sent them home, saying there were still votes left to be counted, they left subdued but still engaged.
What I saw that night ought to be even more nightmare fuel for the Glorious Leaders of ALGOP.
The Alabama Democrats aren’t going to fade back into the shadows. They’ve seen what happened nationally. They know just how close they came to taking the Governor’s mansion. They’ve seen the Blue Shift that touched every one of our 67 Counties.
They’re not going away. In fact, they’re already looking two, four and more years ahead.
And ALGOP will ignore that at their peril.
