Montgomery attorney and small business owner Hampton Harris has become the first Republican to officially qualify for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District special election.

Harris is currently the only Republican to qualify for the race, which will determine who challenges Democratic U.S. Representative Shomari Figures in the newly redrawn district.

The special election follows a major court decision that allowed Alabama to return to a congressional map passed by the Legislature in 2023. Governor Kay Ivey subsequently called for special primary elections for Alabama’s 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th Congressional Districts.

The special primary elections will be held August 11th, 2026.

Harris said his campaign never slowed despite months of legal disputes over Alabama’s congressional boundaries.

“I was the only one willing to challenge Shomari Figures from the beginning, and today I became the first Republican to qualify for this race,” Harris said. “While others waited on the sidelines, I got to work building support and fighting every day for the conservative principles that built Alabama. That hard work did not depend on favorable maps, and it will not stop now. District 2 deserves a fighter who puts Alabama first, not Washington insiders or national Democratic agendas.”

The candidate also praised the court ruling that restored Alabama’s legislatively approved map.

“This redistricting victory is a win for every Alabamian who believes our State, not federal courts, should draw our maps,” Harris continued. “With the 2023 Alabama drawn map restored, voters now have an even stronger opportunity to send a strong conservative to Congress who will support President Trump’s agenda and deliver results for our families.”

Harris previously ran in the district before the State’s latest redistricting changes. He remained active in the race after Gov. Kay Ivey announced new qualifying dates and special primary elections earlier this month.

Harris spent months traveling the district and meeting with voters, including farmers, veterans, small business owners, and families across south and central Alabama.

“From the farms and small towns of the Wiregrass to Montgomery and communities across District 2, I understand the challenges our people face,” Harris said. “I am running to boost economic growth, lower the cost of living, protect life, secure our borders, and defend our freedoms.”

Harris, a Montgomery native, describes himself as a conservative focused on economic growth, border security, and Christian values. His campaign also highlighted endorsements from former State Sen. Dick Brewbaker and Alabama Secretary of State Republican nominee Caroleene Dobson.

“I will continue building on this foundation through hard work and determination to once again secure the Republican nomination,” Harris said.

Harris and his wife, Abbigale Harris, who serves as a JAG officer in the U.S. Air Force, live in Lowndesboro.
