Not Quite $40 Trillion Yet
No, we haven’t crossed the $40 trillion debt threshold…yet
Last week, I published an article about how we might see the national debt surpass $40 trillion Sunday evening. Well, the Debt Clock doesn’t reflect that.
As of 3:45 AM this morning (Aug. 10, 2026), the national debt is only $39,842,276,719,818, according to the Debt Clock.
Don‘t you feel much better now?
Of course, this is only an estimate — the actual number from the Treasury‘s Debt to the Penny resets at the end of each business day, and the number from Aug. 6th was $39,890,263,441,627.83. So, we may have already rolled over $40 trillion. We’ll know more this evening.
Not that it matters greatly — $39.9 trillion or $40 trillion, neither is sustainable.
It might be something to keep in mind before the special primary tomorrow, and certainly before the general election on November 3.
