Trump Makes Election-Eve Push for Rhett Marques
Trump renewed his endorsement of Rhett Marques Monday, urging AL-2 voters to back the state lawmaker in Tuesday’s GOP primary
President Donald Trump made a final election-eve push for State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) Monday night, urging voters in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District to head to the polls Tuesday and send Marques to Washington.
Trump renewed his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of Marques in a post on Truth Social, calling the Enterprise Republican an “America First Patriot” and pointing to his support from U.S. Sen. Katie Britt and other conservatives.
“A Highly Respected State Representative, Businessman, and Civic Leader, prior to running for Congress, Rhett has dedicated his life to serving his Community,” Trump wrote. “As your next Congressman, he will fight tirelessly to Grow our Economy, Champion our Farmers and American Agriculture, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, Advance Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”
Trump ended the message with a direct appeal to voters.
“Rhett Marques has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Representative from Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. Election Day is Tuesday, August 11th. GET OUT AND VOTE FOR RHETT - HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Trump first endorsed Marques in June as the Republican field took shape for the special congressional primary.
Marques is one of six Republicans seeking the GOP nomination Tuesday. He faces Hampton Harris, Christian Horn, David Matthews, Joshua McKee and James Richardson.
Unlike Alabama’s normal primary process, there will be no runoff. The candidate who receives the most votes Tuesday will win the Republican nomination, even without a majority.
That raises the stakes of Trump’s last-minute appeal in a crowded field, where even a small shift in turnout could prove key.
The winner will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures in the Nov. 3 general election. Figures is seeking reelection in a district that was redrawn this year and is now more favorable to Republicans.
Marques followed Trump’s message with his own appeal, asking supporters to remind family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers to vote.
“I’m honored President Trump trusts me to fight for the America First agenda alongside him in Washington. We’re going to put more money back in the pockets of hardworking Alabama families, deport criminal illegal immigrants, and stand up to the left-wing socialist mob trying to destroy our country,” Marques said. “Please remember to vote on Tuesday so common sense can conquer craziness this November.”
Marques, a businessman from Enterprise, currently represents House District 91 in the Alabama Legislature. His campaign has leaned heavily on Trump’s endorsement as well as support from other Republican and conservative groups. The NRA Political Victory Fund has also endorsed Marques and gives him an “A” rating in Tuesday’s race.
The special primary is being held in Alabama’s 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th congressional districts. Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
